1921/1922 Henry A. Johnson Cards Overview
Henry A. Johnson cards are one of the many sets that utilized the design/checklist from the popular W575-1 strip card set and/or E121 American Caramel (some sources say both) set(s). The cards feature a black and white player image along with his name, position, and team at the bottom. They are sometimes listed as a 1921 issue while other times, a 1922 set.
Backs of the cards is what distinguishes these from other W575-1 and E121 card issues.
Henry A. Johnson was a wholesale confectionery company, as his advertisement on the back states. The cards do not have printed advertisements like others. Rather, the advertisement was a purple stamp. The Henry A. Johnson name is there as is the company’s location in Alameda, California.
Collectors should beware as counterfeit Henry A. Johnson backs are known to the hobby. Some Henry A. Johnson-backed cards have been found with other card fronts, such as Weil Baking and E135 Collins-McCarthy issues. Some of those, as evidenced in this thread, are believed to have been faked with modern stamps.
1921/1922 Henry A. Johnson Cards Checklist
Not many Henry A. Johnson cards have been found to date. In addition, a complete W575-1 checklist has never been fully confirmed. That checklist, however, lines up closely with the E121 American Caramel checklist. For that reason, I have listed that checklist below and these would seem to be potential cards that could have a Henry A. Johnson back.
