1930 Player and Sons Country Sports Overview
This was one of Player’s many 1930s sets distributed with their cigarettes products.
For most sports card collectors, the set certainly holds more appeal than many of the company’s non-sports releases. However, the term ‘sports’ is used quite loosely and not in the traditional way most collectors know today. The set is largely comprised of cards for hunting and fishing. Roughly 4/5 of the set is dedicated to those topics.
The cards that will typically hold the most interest of the common sports card collector are the cards devoted to horse racing or polo. But the largest appeal of this set will be felt by collectors of hunting or outdoorsman cards.
The cards are of the more square-like nature seen in some larger variations of UK sets that have both a smaller and larger variation. Fronts include a color image with the Player’s Cigarettes name as well as the name of the sport. Backs include a description of the sport/activity.
While many of Player’s 1930s sets were overproduced and, as a result, inexpensive, this one is a rare exception. Typically, this set starts around $50-$75 as opposed to Player’s more common sets, which are half of that price or less.
