McGill University Hockey Postcards Overview

McGill Hockey Postcard.jpg

The McGill University Hockey Club is widely recognized as the first hockey team of all time. The played what is recorded as the first game in 1875 and, as a result, had some of the earliest hockey collectible postcards.

An early McGill postcard shows a color picture of an intrasquad game. The postcard artwork was courtesy of William Notman and Son, as printed in the corner, and was copyrighted in 1902.

A 1908 postcard depicts the team at practice. The black and white shot covers the front of the postcard with the bottom reading “McGill University Hockey Team at Practice, Montreal.” In 1909, another McGill postcard was created. This one depicts a game (with a full color picture) on McGill’s ice. The caption in red reads, “Hockey Match, McGill Grounds, Montreal.”

Other McGill University Hockey Club postcards sure exist.
