1947 NBC Dupont Cavalcade of America Overview

Babe Ruth 1947 NBC Cavalcade of AmericaThis 1940s Babe Ruth issue featured the slugger from his playing days and was used to promote an NBC radio show called ‘The Story of Babe Ruth’ on the Dupont Cavalcade of America show. The show being promoted was broadcast on Monday, September 29, 1947 and can actually be heard here. Popular company Dupont was merely a sponsor of this program.

The oversized black and white card with white borders features an unnamed Ruth swinging a bat on the front. At 6″ x 9″, it is actually closer to a photograph than a trading card. The Cavalcade of America show was a weekly show of ‘dramas highlighting American deeds of courage and resourcefulness’ as stated on the backs of the cards. Backs also included a total of 54 major league records held by Ruth at the time.

It should be noted that the card has previously been misidentified as a 1937 issue. However, 1947 is the correct date of release. How the cards were distributed is not entirely known.

The card has was released more than a decade after Ruth’s actual playing career had ended so it is not as valuable as most of his earlier cards. It typically starts around $300-$500 in decent condition.
