Sage and Company Boston Trade Card Overview
This trade card was used to promote a business. The card served as an advertisement for Sage and Company in Boston. Pictured is a baseball drawing with a batter awaiting a pitch and a catcher standing behind him.
In addition to the pictures, baseball metaphors were used in the print advertisement. The company said they would ‘strike’ for business and ‘catch’ the trade. They would also not be ‘put out’ by a call from potential customers.
Given the nature of the Boston-based Sage and Boston name coupled with a batter dressed in a red/gray outfit, it is often believed to depict a Boston baseball player.
This card was cataloged by Frank Keetz in his trade card book. However, the title may not be entirely accurate.
This particular one (and others I have seen) have been advertised for Sage and Boston. However, I have seen other non-sports cards with the same design/layout for other companies. To date, I have only seen the baseball card with the Sage and Boston name. However, given the presence of other cards with the same layout using other companies, it is possible that this image appears on other trade cards for different businesses. Unfortunately, no lithographer name is present to better identify these cards.
Sage and Company Boston Trade Card Checklist
Other non-sports cards utilizing this design are known. However, I have not yet located any other sports-themed cards or even been able to definitively call other cards a part of a singular set.
