1912 W-UNC Strip Cards Overview

Stanage 1912 W-UNC.jpg

This set of strip cards features eight major league players but not much is known about them besides that.

Cards are nearly a perfect square and are generally plain in appearance. They are also quite small, measuring only about 1 1/2″ on each side. Given the nature of them as strip cards, they can also be found in different sizes due to the cut. They are similar to the rare W555 set in appearance.

A player’s black and white picture is displayed inside of a black border and a larger olive green border is beyond that. The player’s name is printed in all capital letters at the bottom while the backs are entirely blank.

It isn’t known how or where these cards were distributed. Even the 1912 date is estimated.

A total of eight cards are known to be in the set. However, given the mysterious nature of the cards, more surfacing in the future would not be impossible. Three of the eight cards (those of Brown, Wagner, and Young) feature Hall of Famers.

The cards were not known to Jefferson Burdick and not classified in his American Card Catalog. Therefore, they carry the unclassified designation for strip cards, W-UNC.

To date, SGC has graded no more than a few copies of each.
