Pre-War Soccer Card Sets
Some would question the popularity of soccer as an American sport but there is little doubt that the sport is much more popular in the U.S. than it was a century ago. Pre-war soccer cards do exist and are found in surprisingly large numbers. However, the bulk of those issues are found on an international level.
The cards are most abundant through UK tobacco and cigarette cards, particularly in the 1920s and 1930s. But they are found in many other countries as well as the sport was played around the globe. As you would expect, these cards are generally labeled as ‘football,’ causing a bit of confusion for collectors reading from checklists who may wonder if a card in a multi-sport set features soccer or American football.
