The Collector Connection’s second pre-war auction of 2022 includes a mix of cards and collectibles
The Collector Connection’s second pre-war auction of 2022 is underway. Here’s a look at some of the notable lots.
In all, the auction includes more than 900 lots of graded and raw singles, complete sets, photographs, and more from the pre-war era. Here’s the full catalog.
Leading the way are some of the biggest names in sports, including several cards of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, and more.
One of the true highlights of the auction is a PSA 5 1933 Goudey of Babe Ruth’s famous double-printed No. 144 card. But that’s hardly the only key card from that famous set that is available.
In all, a near set of 1933 Goudey cards is up for grabs, including PSA-graded examples of both of the Lou Gehrig cards. Strong mid-grade cards from the set also include PSA 5 examples of both Jimmie Foxx cards, both Mel Ott cards, both Rogers Hornsby cards, Dizzy Dean, Moe Berg, Hack Wilson, Tony Lazerri, Pie Traynor, Al Simmons, Tris Speaker, Charlie Gehringer, and many other Hall of Famers.
Collectors interested gum era card will also find plenty of other key issues, such as PSA 6 examples of Ted Williams’ and Joe DiMaggio’s cards from the 1941 Play Ball set. Lower-grade gems also include a separate PSA 1 1933 Goudey and a PSA 1 Babe Ruth 1935 Goudey, among many others.
Continuing the Ruth theme, the auction includes several other cards of the slugger, including a 1928 George Ruth Candy Card graded SGC 2, and several others, including graded W517 and W515 cards, as well as a complete 1932 Sanella set, including the Ruth card. Not to be left out, the auction also includes graded W515 and 1933 Goudey Sport Kings cards of Cobb.
Earlier cards, of course, are also found in the auction.
A highlight there is one of the cards sometimes considered as a Ty Cobb rookie — a PSA-graded example of the Detroit Tigers HM Taylor postcard from 1907-09. The auction also includes one of Cobb’s cards, a PSA 1 red portrait variation, from the 1909-11 T206 set. That card leads the way in a group of more than 50 cards from the historic set up for bid, including numerous Hall of Famers, such as Cy Young, Nap Lajoie, Willie Keeler, Jack Chesbro, Johnny Evers, John McGraw, Roger Bresnahan, Chief Bender, and others.
Numerous other issues are featured, too, including dozens of other tobacco, strip, and early caramel cards from American Caramel and others.
The auction also includes more than 50 autographed items. Heading that list is a 1939 first day cover envelope signed by the legendary Honus Wagner and a team-signed baseball from the 1931 Chicago Cubs.
And, of course, the auction includes more than baseball.
Notably, several boxing lots are available, including a rare 1909 Sarony SGC-graded cabinet of early champion James Jeffries. Other boxing cards include those of Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, and a near set of 1910-12 T218 Champions cards, which include numerous fighters, including both Jack Johnson cards. Golf, tennis, track and field, and more are also covered in the fantastic auction.
The entire auction catalog can be viewed here. The auction ends Sunday, November 27 at 10 p.m. EST.
