1935 J.A. Pattreiouex Sporting Celebrities Set Overview

Pattreiouex Sporting Events and Celebrities Joe Louis BoxingThe J.A. Pattreiouex Sporting Celebrities set is a cigarette card issue from the U.K.

The idea of athletes as real celebrities was a popular one by this time. Reinforcing that fact, several other card sets around the same time were called Sporting Celebrities or something very similar (i.e. Celebrities in Sport).

The multi-sport issue from the 1930s covers a variety of sports, including boxing, tennis, golf, cricket, and soccer. It seems to largely mirror the 1935 J.A. Pattreiouex Sporting Events and Stars set. Pictures for the athletes are the same although the card numbers are different and this set is much smaller so the checklist is not the same.

The set includes hockey and other key cards include boxer Joe Louis. Of particular interest is Louis’ issue, which is often the most expensive one in the set as it is recognized as one of his rookie cards.

These cards are different from the Sporting Events and Stars set in that they are narrower, likely as they were included with different products. They are basically a cropped version of the Sporting Events and Stars set.

The Sporting Events and cards were issued in various cigarettes packages, including Senior Service, Junior Member, and Illingworth’s. These Sporting Celebrities cards, however, were issued with Pattreiouex’s Trawler, Critic, and King Lud brands.
