1927 Erdal-Kwak Werner & Mertz Boxing Matches Overview
This series was printed Erdal-Kwak, a German company. Like other Erdal-Kwak cards, this particular set is really a subset of a massive issue.
This subset is Series No. 8 and called Boxing Matches, featuring some famous recent bouts. The actual name untranslated is boxkämpfer. The most popular card in the issue is one featuring Jack Dempsey fighting Gene Tunney in a championship bout won by Tunney. While all of the cards are desirable to boxing collectors, the Dempsey-Tunney card is clearly the key issue in the set.
The cards are printed in color and while some of the cards have the red Erdal and Kwak name on the fronts, others do not.
Today, the cards are somewhat rare in the U.S., though not impossible to find. They are part of one small subset of a larger series created by Erdal-Kwak that included other subjects.
Finally, note that I have listed this as a 1927 set, though no consensus seems to exist with others labeling it as late as 1928 or 1929.
