These rare cards are hardly ever seen here in the U.S. Produced by Chocolat Favarger, a French chocolates company, they are difficult to find here.
Favarger produced numerous series’ of trade cards. These massive sets included many sub-series’ focusing on specific topics. Several sub-series’ involved athletes and two specifically focused on boxers and tennis players. Other sports series’ included aviators, cyclists, swimmers, track and field athletes, and jockeys.
These specific cards are black and white and state the are a Favarger Chocolates set at the top (in French, Edition du Chocolat Favarger). The athlete’s name is at the bottom and many cards in the set only include a person’s last name.
While a specific date is unknown, this appears to be a 1920s issue, as can be determined by several of the athletes that appear.
Finally, of note is that Favarger created a special album for these cards as well. Inside, pages had the series’ numbers and names along with individual spaces for the cards.
