1934-37 Garbaty Film Stars Overview

This unique issue was produced in Germany and mostly includes actors and actresses. A few athletes, including tennis players, made their way into the series, though. The series was released by the Garbaty Cigarette company.

This site has a great breakdown of the series but, in all, there were several subsets making up the larger series. These subsets include:

  • Moderne Schonheitsgalerie (Modern beauty) – Series 1
  • Moderne Schonheitsgalerie (Modern beauty) – Series 2
  • Galerie Schoner-Frauen Des Film (Beautiful women of film)
  • Film-Lieblinge (Film favorites)

The cards are most distinctive by their wide assortment of borders. Looking at the cards, you’d hardly believe they were part of the same set with numerous border designs. But the backs had uniform advertisement designs.

A full list of the athletes in this set has not yet been determined. However, tennis players known to exist are Helen Wills-Moody, Peggy Scriven, and Irmgard Rost. Others likely exist.
