1930 Mazetti Chocolates Athletes Overview
This release was the work of Mazetti Chocolates, a candy company based in Sweden.
These cards are smaller than your standard tobacco and caramel cards. A multi-sport issue, several sports are represented, including boxing and tennis. The pictures are printed in both black and white and with green tints. Measuring only an inch wide and slightly over 2″ tall, they are similar to other Swedish candy issues distributed around the same time period.
Fronts of the card include a full bleed photo with the subject’s name and country in a white box at the bottom. Backs are relatively simple with the Mazetti name and logo as well as, curiously, a pair of eyes at the top. At least a couple of different variations are known as some backs have a horizontal line near the middle separating the name from the logo while others do not.
The set is highlighted by the likes of boxers Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney as well as tennis legends Bill Tilden and Fred Perry.
The cards are quite rare and earning a bit more recognition than they previously did. Commons from the set typically sell for a few dollars while some of the big stars can fetch over $100. While extremely rare, the cards often can be found in decent condition.
