Ty Cobb T206 Tobacco Card Highlights REA Fall Auction

Earlier this year, a collection of seven Ty Cobb T206 cards were discovered in a paper bag in a house. One of those cards was recently included in REA’s Fall Auction and was the highest-grossing card.

The Cobb card, graded a 1.5 by PSA, fetched just under $200,000 in the auction that ended on October 30, 2016. It was the biggest sale in the auction and topped the second-highest card by a considerable margin.

Checking in at No. 2 was a 1916 M101-5 Babe Ruth rookie card. Graded an SGC 40, the Ruth card sold for $168,000.

In addition to the Cobb and Ruth cards, many other significant sales of pre-war cards occurred. A complete graded N162 Goodwin Champions 50-card set, featuring Cap Anson and others, sold for $96,000. Other cards topping $50,000 included a Babe Ruth PSA 8 1933 Goudey card, a Joe Jackson 1914 Boston Garter, and a Ty Cobb T206 (bat on shoulder) PSA 8 with a Sovereign back.

Here’s a complete look at the auction and the prices realized.
