1932-38 Vancouver Peanuts Overview
Like many regional food issues, this set is extremely rare. The cards feature players in a senior league from Vancouver, the Vancouver Senior Amateur League. They were distributed inside of packages of peanuts at Athletic Park. The cards are often cited as either a 1930s issue or, more specifically, believed to be distributed from 1932-38.
As these cards featured senior league players, the names are a bunch of unknowns. The cards have sepia/black and white imagery with mostly action shots of players on the fronts. Backs are completely blank. The cards were pretty low-budget with player names and teams having a typewriter style of print. They mostly look similar but have formatting differences, likely based on the different years they were issued. Some include a number on them, which could have been a uniform number. However, most do not.
Like the player names, the team names will not be familiar to most collectors aside from maybe a small amount familiar with these rare cards or those from the area. Teams represented on cards include:
- Arnold & Quigley / A&Q
- Arrows
- V.A.C. / Athletics
- Home Gas
- United / U.D.L.
A few other teams also appeared in the league as the Firemen and Telephones were also in the circuit. However, to date, I have not seen cards issued for those players, though some may certainly exist.
For a senior league, it was pretty well developed. Players had full uniforms with team names and acronyms on them, as indicated by the cards. Not to mention, they also printed these cards. A few cards were even printed for the umpires.
Some teams were managed by a player. We can say that based on one of the known cards of a player named Coley Hall, who served as a team’s first baseman and also his manager. That, of course, was not uncommon as even major league teams often had player/managers. Other teams may have had a dedicated manager. Another card features a man named Ernie Paepke, who was listed as a manager for Home Gas without listing a position for him.
The cards are extremely rare with not many examples known aside from a large collection of nearly 130 currently at the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame. Cards can sell for as much as $100 or so as type collectors or Canadian collectors have taken interest in them. Prices are not overly crazy, however, because we’re dealing with players that weren’t really professionals. Heritage sold a lot of 19 of them back in 2011 for a little over $1,100.
1932-38 Vancouver Peanuts Checklist
This checklist includes the names of players seen with cards in the sets. However, it does not indicate which year their specific card may have been from. While no confirmed checklist of the cards is known, thanks to the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame (which graciously provided the names of the 100+ cards they have in their collection), we have a much clearer idea of the full set’s checklist.
While we have not been able to identify the years of the cards, we can provide the list of known cards, indicating the names/titles on the fronts to show the different number of cards.
Some cards have card numbers. However, because all do not, I have simply presented the list below in alphabetical order. Cards with numbers on them have the number stated in parentheses.
