1922-23 Boys Cinema Famous Film Heroes Overview
These cards were distributed by Boys’ Cinema publication, a British magazine.
It is a brief six-card set featuring actors portraying roles in famous movies of the time. It is almost entirely a non-sports issue but is interesting to sports collectors because of a card featuring the legendary French boxer George Carpentier.
Carpentier, like many famous athletes, did a bit of acting. He is featured in this set as Merodach, a boxing character. The front of the card is titled, ‘Carpentier as an old time prizefighter.’
The set is often listed as a 1922 issue but that is only partially true. The earliest cards were issued in late 1922 but continued into January 1923 with Carpentier’s card being issued in the January 20 publication.
