1940 Kemmel Les Vedettes Sportives Overview
This set of French candy cards was a multi-sport issue. Athletes were included from boxing, tennis, track and field, auto racing, cricket, and more.
The cards have light brown borders with sepia pictures. The subject’s name and a card number is printed in the bottom border.
Backs include an advertisement for Kemmel, the distributor of the cards, as well as a brief description of the set and a mention that a special album was available. Backs also include the Les Vedettes name, which translates to Sports Stars. Many times, this is simply referred to as the 1940 Kemmel set.
The set is highlighted mostly by the boxing and tennis cards. Tennis players include Bill Tilden, Suzanne Lenglen, Molla Mallory, Henri Cochet, Jean Borotra, Rene Lacoste, and others. Boxers include the legendary Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney as well as several others.
While most sources cite this as a 1940 set, it has also been listed as a 1928 set as well.
