1929 Simonets Sporting Celebrities Overview
This rare set features athletes across a variety of sports. The cards were issued by Simonets, Ltd. for their cigarette products.
The cards featured real black and white images. Backs of the cards called this ‘A series of sporting celebrities,’ which is how the set gets its name. It also attributes the cards to Simonets.
Several sports are represented in the issue, including boxing, tennis, soccer, cricket, and more. The boxing and tennis cards, in particular, are highly desired. Tennis Hall of Famers Bill Tilden, Rene Lacoste, and Helen Wills are three of the highlights here.
While there are only 27 cards in the set, it is not an easy one to assemble. The cards are rarely seen and are generally pretty tough to find.
