SC12 Canadian Miscellany Silks Overview
This massive set includes small woven silks covering all sorts of topics. The exact maker and year of production is unknown, though they are sometimes said to be the work of the Imperial Tobacco Company of Canada.
Glancing in the American Card Catalog, you might be inclined to pass this classification up. But buried in the silks section is this classification that includes sport subjects. It is given an SC categorization to represent silks that are from Canada.
The exact sizes of the silks vary depending on how they were cut. But in general, they are approximately 1 3/4″ wide by 3″ tall and all have a vertical layout.
Jefferson Burdick classified these as small woven silks in the Catalog, indicating they featured a wide variety of subjects, including Arms of Nations, provinces, schools, regiments, animals, and other general subjects. Others not mentioned in the book cover things like months of the year.
Even without Burdick’s book, it would be easy to identify this as a Canadian issue for a couple of reasons. First, Canada is the country represented the most in the countries section with several different silks. Second, the set includes Canadian provinces and not American states. Additionally, all of the colleges and universities mentioned are Canadian.
Countries were the most populous subject but one of the subjects also mentioned is sports. The silks do not cover specific athletes or even pictures of generic unnamed players. Instead, the silks feature equipment from various sports, such as the baseball one shown here. A total of nine sports are known to be included.
Interestingly enough, the baseball silk is the only one of the sports that does not mention the name of it, even though it is clearly identifiable with the catcher’s mask, bats, and ball.
Finally, it should be mentioned that many color variations exist for the silks. For example, while this baseball silk with a blue background is shown here, the baseball silk can be found with other different backgrounds as well.
