1910 Pet Cigarettes and Kopec Cigarettes Overview
This rare set features mostly boxers and track and field stars, with a few other sports (such as wrestling) sprinkled in.
The cards were distributed in packages of Pet Cigarettes and Kopec Cigarettes packages. Pet Cigarettes was originally classified in the American Card Catalog as T224 while Kopec was T229 but today, many collectors lump both of them together as T229 sets as the cards and subjects in the set are the same.
Cards include color pictures of subjects on the front with names in small capital letters at the bottom. They look like many other tobacco issues of the era, sch as the T206 set with a simple white border. The backs have biographies of the subjects as well as either the Pet or Kopec name.
Interestingly, the set chose to feature some retired athletes, including legendary boxer John Sullivan, who is pictured as a white-haired man.
While boxing and track and field are the primary sports here, wrestling is also included with a card of early star Frank Gotch. Aviation, cycling, swimming, and roller skating are also featured here. Of note with regards to that last sport is that a roller skater named Harley Davidson is featured in the set. Surprisingly, there is no connection with the Harley-Davidson motorcycle company.
