1917 Gartmann Fighting Games Overview

1917 Gartmann Wrestling Card Fighting GamesThis oversized issue was issued by Gartmann Chocolates (Gartmann Schokolade), a German candy company. Like other international issues, this was a six-card subset that was part of a larger overall set. Other sports are featured, too, including a boxing subset, tennis, soccer, and winter sports.

This series is called the Kampfspiele series, which translates to ‘Fighting Games.’ While I have seen a wrestling card in it, I have not seen any others in this particular subset. This particular subset also appears to be dated to 1917 while other Gartmann issues are commonly believed to be from 1926. I am unsure if this date is correct.

The cards are tall and narrow, similar to some of the vintage Topps basketball issues of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Cards feature color pictures of tennis players on the fronts and a relatively long bio of the subject on the back in brown ink.

This series is #500 as indicated on the fronts and a card number is printed there as well.
