1917 D328 Weil Baking Overview
The 1917 D328 Weil Baking Company set includes a total of 200 cards. It was distributed by Weil Baking, a New Orleans company.
The cards were printed in black and white with fronts including a player image and name. They are similar in design to the E135 Collins-McCarthy set, as noted in the American Card Catalog. In addition, the two sets share the same checklist.
Backs of the Weil Baking cards stated that there were 200 in the set comprising their ‘Hall of Fame.’ It also provided the company’s address at 4914 Prytania Street.
Numerous stars are included in the set, including Joe Jackson, Grover Alexander, Home Run Baker, Ty Cobb, Eddie Collins, Sam Crawford, Happy Felsch, Johnny Evers, Chick Gandil, Harry Hooper, Rogers Hornsby, Hughie Jennings, Walter Johnson, John McGraw, Ray Schalk, Tris Speaker, George Sisler, Honus Wagner, Buck Weaver, Zack Wheat, Smoky Joe Wood.
The set is known for its large collection of banned players from the 1919 Chicago Black Sox team. Of the eight players banned from the sport for life, six are included here in Jackson, Felsch, Gandil, Weaver, Claude Williams, and Eddie Cicotte. The only two not included are Swede Risberg and Fred McMullin.
