1932 D32 Drake’s Cake and Yankee Cake Overview

1925-drakes-cakes-61-ruthDrake’s Cake/Yankee Cake put together a set of movie stars in 1932. While the cards are recognized as Drake’s Cake cards they can also be found with Yankee Cake backs.

The set is often listed as a 1925 issue, although that is impossible. Others credit it as a 1932 set, which is more realistic. That 1932 issue is more in line due to the presence of Maureen O’Sullivan, who was not active as a movie star until the 1930s. In 1925, she would have been only 14 years old. The only possibility for a 1925 set is one that would have started that year but spanned several years. Other similar evidence suggests the set could not possibly have been made that early, too, including a card for Babe Ruth.

While most of the set doesn’t appeal to collectors of only sports cards, the issue does boast one big time player.

Babe Ruth.

Ruth is the lone baseball subject in the collection of movie stars. And he’s included only because he appeared in some films. Ruth is called a Universal star but he did not appear in Universal films until 1932. Thus, his card is another reason the set cannot be dated to 1925. Here’s a closer look at that topic.

The front of the card is a black and white image of Ruth. The back has a Drake’s/Yankee Cake logo at the top and states the following:

“Made from the finest ingredients obtainable. Best butter, eggs, sugar, milk, fruits, spices, etc. – and plenty of them. Old fashioned home methods are then applied in our spotless kitchens to give you this result. Always open for inspection.”

In addition, the backs also state that the card is one of a series of 64 pictures of prominent film stars. The cards were found in most packages of Drake’s Cake (and, presumably, Yankee Cake) products.
