1935 United Tobacco World Famous Boxers Set Overview
These cards were distributed by United Tobacco for their cigarette brand packages. They appear to have been inserted with various brands as no specific brand name is printed on the cards. Backs only state that they were packed with ‘these cigarettes,’ leaving it open to interpretation.
Fronts featured real black and white images of boxers. While their names did not appear on the fronts, they were on the backs along with a card number. The backs of the cards indicated that there were 100 in the set. While I have not yet seen a complete checklist for these cards, the set does include the legendary Joe Louis and his card is considered a rookie by collectors.
Interestingly, the text on the cards is printed in both English and Dutch. Dutch is the official language in several countries, including the Netherlands and Belgium. It is not known exactly where these cards were distributed.
The cards also advertised that a special album was created for them to store the pictures. They were supposedly available from tobacco dealers, presumably in the same area where the cards were available.
