1928 Player and Sons Lawn Tennis Set Overview

1928 Player Sons Lawn TennisThis is a set from the UK that features pictures of various tennis players. The cards were distributed by John Player & Sons, a Nottingham, England company, for their Player’s Cigarettes packages.

The issue includes both male and female players with black and white images on the front and a short biography of the player on the back. Names of the players as well as their country was printed in a light brown ink.

Notable names in the set include Rene Lacoste, Bill Tilden, and Helen Wills-Moody, among others.

Parallel Set

A parallel set of these was also printed by Churchman, another popular cigarette product out of the UK. The cards are mostly pretty similar except the Churchman cards have the Churchman Cigarettes name at the top of the front of the cards. Player and Sons cards have no such mention on the front as their name only appears on the back.

The Player and Sons cards are much rarer than the Churchman issue. At the time of this writing, PSA has graded more than four times as many Churchman cards than they have cards from the Player and Sons set.
