E210 York Caramel Overview
The E210 York Caramel set includes a total of 60 cards. Cards feature black and white player images and the player’s name was included both on the front and the back.
Backs stated that the cards were part of 60 of the most prominent stars in baseball and also carried the York Caramel Company name.
The set was an error-filled one to be sure. Numerous spelling errors were made and while some were corrected, others were not. In addition, several photograph mistakes were made as well that were not corrected. Two involved Hall of Fame players Hack Wilson and Bill Terry, who were not depicted properly as their cards show other players.
Two different types of York Caramel cards exist. The easiest way to tell them apart is from the backs. One has the text on the back facing the left (Type 1) while the other has the text facing to the right (Type 2). Based on PSA’s Population Reports, Type 2 is about 5-6 times more scarce than Type 1. Almost all of the cards in the two types are exactly the same other than the orientation of the backs. However, a few cards are different across the two types. Those cards are noted below in the checklist.
That checklist, by the way, is kind of a mess. But Old Cardboard sums it up well here and also matches the cards to the checklists in the F50 and W502 sets since they are practically the same.
60 cards are cited in the set but that isn’t really true when you count the variations, and at least two of those exist. If you count the errors that have corrections, you come up with even more. All told, Type 1 has 62 cards and Type 2 has 60.
Type 1 cards were produced in 1927 while Type 2 cards are from 1928.
