R325 Goudey Knot Hole League Game Cards Overview

The 1935 Goudey Knot Hole League issue was a set of cards for a baseball game. One side had a special action for the game while the other had a scorecard and directions. The cards were distributed with Goudey’s Big League Gum product. No players or pictures of players are included in the issue.

Note that the set is commonly listed as a 1937 issue. However, 1935 is the more likely date. The cards are copyrighted with that date and the teams featured on the scorecard on the back were the St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers – the 1934 World Series teams from the previous season.

At 2 3/8″ x 2 7/8″, the cards were nearly a perfect square and the same sizes as the Goudey sets made previously in 1933, 1934, 1935, and 1936.

A total of 24 different game cards were printed. Interestingly, the cards each state that there are 100 different cards are available. Only ten cards were needed to effectively play the game but the more a collector had, the more variety was included in the game.

The same actions were used in Goudey’s regular 1936 set, which featured players on the front and game actions on the back. Goudey also created a similar, equally banal set for football through their Varsity Kings game cards.

The Number 5 Type Collection blog has some great information about this issue.

No formal checklist for the set exists since the cards do not feature individual players and are simply action cards for the game.
