1937-38 World Wide Gum V356 Ice Kings Overview

V356.jpgThe 1937-38 V356 Ice Kings hockey card set includes a total of 135 cards. The set has a V-Card designation as it was a gum/candy issue and was printed in Canada.

The cards were produced by World Wide Gum, who created the ‘Canadian version’ of the U.S. Goudey cards. The cards feature black and white player images on the front along with the player’s name and card number in a simple white box at the bottom.

The backs were equally basic with the card number, player name, team, and position printed at the tops followed by a biography in both English and French. The bottom indicated (in French) that the cards were printed in Canada.

One interesting card is No. 100 – that of Howie Morenz, Jr. Morenz Jr. was the son of Hall of Famer Howie Morenz but was not a player. Instead, he appeared on card No. 100 as a 10-year old (or possibly an 11-year old) as he was born in 1927.

The reason for the inclusion of Morenz, Jr. is tied to his father. Morenz Sr. suddenly passed away in 1937 and the set, looking to honor him, included his son on this card, which lists him as the mascot of the Montreal Canadiens. Morenz, Jr. was thrust into the spotlight after his father’s death, but while he tried his hand at hockey, he never made it out of the minor leagues.
