1934 Churchman Well-Known Ties Set Overview
Sports collectors might be inclined to think that these cards reviewed some of the great tied games in history. However, instead, this unique set featured well known ties that were purportedly worn at historic places.
These cards were issued by W.A. and A.C. Churchman, a division of the Imperial Tobacco Company, for their Churchman’s Cigarettes product. In all, a total of 50 cards were in the set.
As was the case with other Churchman sets, the company produced a smaller sized card and then a larger one that was closer to a square. There is a twist here in that the larger set, unlike others, actually included two different series’ of 12 for a total of 24 cards. The larger set is significantly rarer.
Of note is that the tie shown was not actually discussed on many of the cards. Instead, the back was reserved for a discussion of the event/location. While it is mostly a non-sports set, the last dozen cards in it feature ties worn at sporting events. The cards had a distinctive look with a black and white image of the location in the background and a colored version of the tie worn in full color.
Most of those were for soccer and rugby matches. However, a card is reserved for tennis showing the tie worn at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, home of Wimbledon. The picture shown is the club’s famous Centre Court. As with others, no mention is made on the back of the tie. The tennis card is found in both the smaller-sized and larger-sized sets.
