E224 Texas Tommy Overview
The E224 Texas Tommy set included two distinct types of cards.
Both included a sepia image of a player on the front along with his name and team, but one set was larger in size. The larger set also included a biography of the player while the smaller set of cards had blank backs. The larger cards with the text on the back had “Texas Tommy” at the tops, which makes it easy to identify those. The first, larger type is typically identified as Type 1 while the smaller set is Type 2.
Texas Tommy cards were produced by the Cardinet Candy Company in California. These cards were distributed with packages of the company’s Texas Tommy candy bars.
The ‘Texas Tommy’ was actually a swing style dance that originated in nearby San Francisco (The Cardinet Candy Company was based in Oakland) in the early 1900s. For that reason, it is likely that the candy bar got its name from that popular dance.
Collectors looking for these cards will often have a difficult time finding them. Fewer than 100 total have been graded by PSA and SGC so far and that is in large part due to the regional nature of this issue.
