1926 Pottsville Maroons Postcards Overview

Jack Ernst

The Pottsville Maroons aren’t too well known these days, but they were actually an NFL team back in the 1920s from 1925 through 1929. The club was based out of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, a small town in the east central part of the state.

This is a rare set of postcard featuring members of the team in 1926. These cards feature only black and white player images on the front with a white border. The postcards are RPPCs, featuring actual pictures of players instead of drawn or painted lithographs.

The set is an important one not only for its rarity but because it is often considered as the first professional card set of any kind. Some other individual professional items had been printed before that (either on their own or part of other non-professional football sets) but this is seen as the first team set featuring only professional football players.

Another important footnote to the set is that it was produced the year after Pottsville won the NFL championship but had it stripped from them in a controversial move.

The postcard here features Jack Ernst.
