1889 Duke/Gail & Ax Novelties Set Overview
This unique novelties set was created by Duke Tobacco for its Honest Long Cut Tobacco brand as well as Gail & Ax for its Navy Long Cut products. Cards can be found with both the Duke and Gail & Ax advertisements.
Cards were produced in or around 1889. They were die-cuts featuring various women against different backdrops. The set is very similar to the N228 Kinney Novelties set, particularly the N228-3, N228-4, and N228-6 subsets, which featured die-cut cards.
These die-cuts featured women with different backgrounds. Many different things were used but several merely picture inside of a mirror.
While it is mostly a non-sports set, one woman is pictured against a tennis racket. Interestingly enough, a die-cut tennis card was also found in that aforementioned N228 Kinney set.
Some of the Kinney subsets are quite rare. However, as a whole, they are easier to find than these Duke/Gail & Ax novelties and these cards typically sell for more.
