1921 Good Wood Boxes Babe Ruth Blotter Overview

1921 Good Wood Boxes Babe Ruth Blotter Ink blotters were generally rectangular cards that were popular in the days of fountain pens. They would usually be kept on desks and were used to allow people to wipe off excess ink. To properly absorb the ink, blotters are generally a little thicker and have a different texture than traditional cards.

This blotter was an advertisement for Good Wood Boxes issued for August in 1921. The card encouraged customers to ship items in Good Wood Boxes made by the Treen Box Company. The card also pictures Hall of Famer Babe Ruth sitting on a bench holding a bat and with baseballs at his feet. A smaller, black and white image of a player hitting a baseball (presumably Ruth) is above that drawing. The card reads, “Babe Ruth packs a wicked wallow in wood.” This card is interesting in that it was one of the earlier cards of Ruth’s career and one of his first since joining the Yankees in 1920.

While not standard trading cards, blotters with sports figures are absolutely collectible. Because they were used to absorb extra ink, you will often find them with ink spots all over them. Ones that haven’t been covered in ink demand a premium.

Blotters were generally an advertisement for a specific product, service, or organization. Along with a picture of a sports figure or team, they usually sought to promote some type of product or business.
