1920s Babe Ruth Underwear Photo Premium Overview
As the most popular player in baseball, Yankees slugger Babe Ruth did more than his fair share of off-the-field promotions. In addition to making movies and having his own candy bars, Ruth also promoted a line of underwear.
This photo was distributed as a premium item and featured a replica signature of Ruth.
Goldin Auctions says the photos were included inside boxes of the underwear with each box containing numerous shirts. Those boxes were green and had a color portrait picture of Ruth inside of the oval part of a number ‘9’. At the bottom, they read:
Babe Ruth
All America (sic) Athletic Underwear
The Champion Nine
The exact dating of this photo is not currently known. However, that earlier Goldin link has a photo with the date 1927-28 inscribed onto it so it appears to be a 1920s issue.
Today, the white undershirts and boxes still come up for sale from auction houses. The photos are actually more difficult to find.
