1938 United Tobacco Our South Africa Past & Present Set Overview
This set featured images from around South Africa. The cards were issued as a large set by United Tobacco, which also produced a few other sports issues in the 1930s. While the cards are often simply called the United Tobacco set, they were actually issued by that company inside packages of their ‘C to C’ cigarette products.
Titled ‘Our South Africa Past & Present,’ cards feature colorful images of various people around the country. Backs include a name/title of the subject or even pictured. The backs were printed in both English and Afrikaans.
While sports were not the focus here, a few did make their way into the set. Most notably, a tennis card is included near the end (card No. 190). Other minor sports, such as cycling, are also included as well.
Albums were also created for collectors to store these cards. Many must have taken advantage of them as they aren’t too difficult to find today. Both English and Afrikaans versions of the album were offered. The albums contained 200 pages.
