Merchants Bakery Overview
The unclassified 1917 Merchants Bakery set, like several others, was a mirror image of the E135 Collins-McCarthy cards. Both sets used the same player images and checklist with the only difference being the advertisement for each one on the backs. Merchants Bakery was a bread manufacturer in Norfolk, Virginia.
These cards were black and white with player images, names, positions, and teams on the front along with a card number.
Backs of the Merchants Bakery cards included an advertisement for their bread products and also stated that there were 200 found in the set. The cards could be found with loaves of Sunrize and Butter Bread. Only one card was packaged inside of each loaf, which would make collecting an entire set extremely difficult.
In addition, the same cards were used for other companies’ sets, including the H801-8 The Boston Store, D350 Standard Biscuit, and D328 Weil Baking issues. The Merchants Bakery set is the only one of these not found in the American Card Catalog and a blank-backed version of these same cards is also known as well.
Note that some photograph/variation issues exist in this set.
