1921/1922 Keating Candy E121/W575-1 Overview
Keating Candy cards are one of the many sets that utilized the design/checklist from the popular W575-1 strip card set and/or E121 American Caramel set. The cards are feature a black and white player image along with his name, position, and team at the bottom. These cards are recognized as both a 1921 issue or a 1922 issue by different collectors.
Backs of the cards is what distinguishes these from other W575-1 and E121 card issues.
The back of these cards include a large advertisement for the James P. Keating Candy Company. The back advertisement is a simple stamp with the James P. Keating Company name. It states they are performed manufacturing and jobbing, selling wholesale only . The company’s address, 1725 11th Street in Sacramento, California, is also provided.
Some cards, such as the one shown, have been found with punch holes in them. Many companies that distributed cards would offer prizes to collectors for redeeming them. It is unclear if those are redeemed cards or just the work of random collectors punching holes into them. Punch hole redemptions were common, however, as companies would use that as a way to indicate if a card had already been redeemed or not. After punching the card, they would sometimes be returned to the collector.
According to this information from the great granddaughter of James Keating, the company started small with James and his wife making chocolates in their kitchen before turning it into a legitimate business in downtown Sacramento. The company then became a liquor distributor after Prohibition.
1921/1922 Keating Candy E121/W575-1 Checklist
Not many Keating Candy cards have been found to date. In addition, a complete W575-1 checklist has never been fully confirmed. That checklist, however, lines up closely with the E121 American Caramel checklist. For that reason, I have listed that checklist below and these would seem to be potential cards that could have a Keating Candy back.
