1911 D359 Rochester Baking Philadelphia Athletics Overview

The 1911 D359 Williams Baking Philadelphia Athletics set was created as a celebratory issue for the 1910 World Series champs. But another company, Rochester Baking, also got in the act, using the same cards for a parallel set. Both sets also parallel the rare T208 Cullivan’s Fireside issue.

Fronts featured color images of the players while the bottoms include their name and the Athletics team name. Across the top of the front of the cards is “World’s Champions 1910.”

The backs indicate there are 18 cards in the set. Those are different from the Williams Baking cards and read as follows:

“This is one of a series of 18 cards, which we are giving with each loaf of Gibson & Perfecto Bread.”

The back continues by stating that a different card was being given away each day.

The cards also differed from the Williams Baking cards in that it offered a redemption contest. To anyone collecting the entire set, they could be sent or returned to the Rochester Baking Company offices in exchange for a ‘Mail of all Nations’ card set or a megaphone. In addition, the Athletics cards would be returned.

The Mail of all Nations card promotion did go through and you can find these cards available even today. They are categorized as D73 and feature various mail carriers around the world.
