Base Ball Outfits Trade Card Overview

baseball_outfits.jpgThis is a trade card that was used to promote a business.

The card serves as an advertisement for a retailer selling baseball outfits. The particular business on this trade card shown is for a store called Wright and Ditson.

The card shows a black and white picture of a player fielding a ball. He is wearing a Boston uniform, which makes sense because Wright and Ditson’s store was located in Boston. A specific player is unfortunately not identified and that would make the item even more desirable. A good shot of the fielder’s face is not even available since the view is obstructed by one of his raised arms.

In addition to advertising baseball outfits (which they say is a specialty of the store), other baseball items, including bats, balls, bases, gloves, masks, and score books are mentioned as well. Primarily, in fact, Wright & Ditson were known for their production and sales of tennis equipment, such as rackets and balls.

It should also be noted that other similar types of layouts to the one shown here were created by the company and used in their print advertisements. I am unsure if this ‘card’ is actually a card or merely a cut from an advertisement of some sort.
