1923-24 Paulin’s Candies Famous Hockey Players Overview

Paulin's Candies - MorrisPaulin’s Candies produced this rare set in the 1920s featuring a total of 70 hockey players from the Western Canada Hockey League.

Fronts of the cards feature a black and image of a player with his name at the bottom. The back has a card number and also a special redemption offer for collectors. A complete set of 70 cards could be sent to the Paulin Chambers Company in Winnipeg, Manitoba in exchange for a hockey stick or a box of chocolates. The box of chocolates was offered specifically to girls who did not want the hockey stick.

One important thing with regards to the redemption program is that cards would be returned to the collectors. However, so that they could not be used again, the company punched a hole through them to mark them as having been previously redeemed. For that reason, these will often be found with a hole punched in them and those cards, subsequently, have a lesser value.

It is also worth noting that the name format on the fronts varies. While most cards have a first and last name, often, a nickname is used for the first name.

In addition to the hole punch, many of these cards are found with stamps as well. These appear to be another method that the company used to classify redeemed cards.

A final note is that the card stock on these is very thin. As a result, they are easily damaged and high-grade cards are difficult to find.
