Pathe Freres Phonograph Company Babe Ruth Premiuim Overview

Ruth Pathe Freres.jpeg

Pathe Freres, a French phonograph company, produced these premiums in the early 1920s. The company, as stated on the back of the photographs, had a presence in Brooklyn, New York.

The premium advertising piece was a black and white photograph of New York Yankees slugger Babe Ruth. A 3/4 shot of Ruth was on the front along with his replica signature. The back included his home run totals from the 1920 season. The back also provides some vitals of Ruth, such as his birthplace, birth date, height, and weight.

The photo is often listed as being a 1921 issue. Most pictures that exist include Ruth’s entire home run totals for every month. However, this auction description from Goodwin seems to suggest that an alternate version exists with only part of September’s home run totals. For that reason, it is their opinion that at least some photos were printed in 1920.
