Frank Leslie’s Woodcuts Overview
Frank Leslie’s Illustrated was a news publication that began in 1852. Even after his death in 1880, it continued for more than four more decades, ceasing operations in 1922.
What are woodcuts? Woodcuts are artist renderings carved into a block of wood. The renderings are then partially covered with ink and used as sort of a stamp to print the image on paper. Here’s Wikipedia’s explanation of the process.
Leslie’s newspaper included a variety of woodcut images, some of which included baseball. Leslie’s woodcut images ranged from baseball scenes to individual players. Here are some that have been documented.
