1922 W573 Cream Nut/Goodie Bread Overview
The W573 strip cards are often confused with the E120 American Caramel set. Fronts are the same, but the backs of the W573 issue are blank (E120 American Caramel cards have team checklists on the backs).
These blank-backed cards were sometimes used by other companies as well. One such advertisement on the back was for Cream Nut and Goodie Bread.
The W573 Cream Nut and Goodie Bread cards are the same as regular W573 issues. The only difference is the back, which has an advertisement for those bread brands. The backs of these cards read, ‘Ask your dealer for Cream Nut or Goodie Bread and get a base ball star,” indirectly stating that these cards were either packed in the loaves of bread or distributed by the stores that carried them.
Interestingly enough is that the backs also advertise only 120 cards in the set. The bread brands apparently did not include the full set of W573 cards – not the possible 240-card set or not even the set of all known W573 cards to date since more than 120 of those cards have been discovered so far. The company appears to have taken a shortened 120-card issue and used it for this promotion. Unfortunately, exactly which cards are available isn’t entirely known since the entire set with these backs has not yet been discovered.
