1921/1922 Shotwell Manufacturing Company Overview

E121 Shotwell Back.jpge121Shotwell Manufacturing cards are one of the many sets that utilized the design/checklist from the popular W575-1 strip card set and/or E121 American Caramel set. The cards are feature a black and white player image along with his name, position, and team at the bottom. These cards are recognized as both a 1921 issue or a 1922 issue by different collectors.

Backs of the cards is what distinguishes these from other W575-1 and E121 card issues.

The back of these cards include an advertisement for the company. Shotwell dabbled in all sorts of food-related products and, as the ad states, had a presence in both Chicago, IL and Brooklyn, NY. They were manufacturers of checkers, popcorn, confection, and confectionery specialties, according to the advertisement.

Shotwell baseball cards are extremely scarce with only a few discovered. The highest-profile one features Babe Ruth and is graded a 1.5 by PSA.

Shotwell was also famous for other sports-related cards and that name is recognizable by early football card collectors. Perhaps most notably, they created some football card sets surrounding star Red Grange and his participation in a movie. One of those sets was printed without advertising backs while the other one had Shotwell ads.

1921/1922 Shotwell Manufacturing Company Checklist

Not many Shotwell Manufacturing cards have been found to date. In addition, a complete W575-1 checklist has never been fully confirmed. That checklist, however, lines up closely with the E121 American Caramel checklist. For that reason, I have listed that checklist below and these would seem to be potential cards that could have a Shotwell Manufacturing back.
