1888 Duke Histories of Poor Boys Set Overview
This unique set was one of two from the same time period that was issued by Duke Sons Tobacco. Duke issued a series of booklets focusing on famous generals that was categorized as N78 by Jefferson Burdick in the American Card Catalog. This set was listed as N79 and was another set of booklets, though, of different subjects.
The focal point of this set was to identify boys that were poor as children but had grown into wealthy and successful men. It is often called the Histories of Poor Boys set, though the full name as given by Burdick is Histories of Poor Boys and Other Famous People.
The booklets are likely considered more by sports card collectors as they were given a designation in the ACC. Most are non-sports subjects but a pair of boxers, John Sullivan and Jake Kilrain, are featured as well. Booklets have colorful covers and are 16 pages each.
