1887 N693 Kalamazoo Team Bats Overview
The 1887 N693 Kalamazoo Team Bats set is comprised of six cards. As the name states, these are cards featuring entire teams.
Similar to other sepia-toned 19th Century sets, such as the N172 Old Judge issue, these are actually pictures mounted onto a cardboard backing. The cards were given as a premium item for Kalamazoo Bats Cigarettes.
Utilizing a horizontal layout, a team portrait is on the front along with their name displayed at the bottom. Team names, other than the Athletic Club, have the B.B.C. label after them for ‘Base Ball Club.’ And over on one side, there is a small printed ad advising collectors to ‘Smoke Kalamazoo Bats.’
As this Goodwin auction states, the Pittsburgh card is considered the most difficult to find.
